Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the effectiveness of tDCS and cognitive rehabilitation of working memory and the combination of these two methods on speed of processing and symptoms of dyslexia on bilingual children. Research method; semi experimental (pre-test, post-test and control group). Research population included all of the bilingual children at both sex at the age of 7-11 in Tehran and Kahrizak cities. Available samples were selected through Wexler intelligent questionnaire and Nama dyslexia test scores, so that 40 dyslexic students (based on school diagnostic system) and situated randomly in 4 groups: a) intervention by tDCS brain stimulation, b) computational cognitive rehabilitation via working memory module of RehaCom, c) simultaneous intervention of computational cognitive rehabilitation and brain stimulation tDCS and d) control group. Nama and speed of processing (SDMT) tests have been performed on all of the four groups in pre-test and post-test in order to data collecting. Data analysis results using analysis of multi-variable covariance in SPSS-22 showed that mentioned interventions could have meaningful changes in speed of processing and in decreasing dyslexia symptoms. Post hoc test results also showed that combination method first of all and then brain stimulation method have been the most effectiveness, but the mere computational cognitive rehabilitation method has not been influenced on these two variables alone.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the quality of individual economic decision making under risk and uncertainty. The research method is a quasi-experiment with single group and a post-test. The total population of the students of Shahid Beheshti University in 97 was 8.700 and due to non-normal distribution, we should use non-parametric Wilcoxon test, with sample of 180. The tool used to investigate the role of cognitive biases that prospect theory in economic decision-making was predicted was a multi-dimensional task we built which measured 31 problems in 5 sections that through phenomena such as risk aversion, loss aversion, ambiguity aversion, reference dependency, probability weighting and so on in shows irrationality in economic decisionmaking. Higher score means more irrational according to neoclassical economics. The median of scores was 25 out of 31 scores. In other words, more than 80% of participants received grades above 50% (or 15.5 points) (p <0.05). These findings fully supported the prospect theory that first two cognitive psychologists proposed as a correction to the expected utility theory. The prospect theory can explain, and can predicts, and intends to dissolve the gap between economy and psychology. The present research is an initial step in showing the significant role of psychology and cognition in economic decision-making and emphasize the importance of psychology in explaining economic tendencies and findings especially in our country, as the founders of the economy have expressed many centuries ago.

Abstract

The topic of this study is to compare the absolute threshold of readability among ten commonly used Persian fonts in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) reading techniques task at three reading speed (100, 300 and 500 words per minute). RSVP is a cognitive task design method that is also used in fast reading technologies. This research had two goals: First, determine the optimal Persian font from a visual ergonomic perspective and others investigate the effect of demographic variables (age, gender and education degree) and some cognitive abilities (memory and processing speed) on total numbers of reading errors. In this study, for the first time, the concept of absolute threshold of readability was introduced as an objective indicator in comparing fonts.
Twenty subjects participated in this study with ages ranging from 11-79 years and degrees from undergraduate to PhD. The results shown that Iran Sans 5.5 is the optimal font from visual ergonomic perspective. It was also found that age (demographic) and short-term memory (cognitive ability) are correlated with total numbers of reading errors.

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of logotherapy based on Rumi's thoughts and acceptance and commitment therapy on the elderly's autobiographical memory. The research method was semi-experimental with pre-test and post-test design and the follow-up period. The sample consisted of 66 older people (46 females and 20 males) referred to daily rehabilitation centers of Sari city, who were selected by available sampling method and were randomly divided into two experimental and one control group.  The semi-structured autobiographical memory interview was used to collect data. For the first experimental group, logotherapy based on Rumi's thoughts and for the second experimental group, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, each was provided for 8 sessions of 75 minutes, during which the control group received no intervention. The results of the repeated measures analysis of variance showed that logotherapy based on Rumi's thoughts and acceptance and commitment therapy improved autobiographical memory and its components in the elderly. The results also showed that there was a significant difference between the effectiveness of the two groups of logotherapy based on Rumi's thoughts and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, so that logotherapy based on Rumi's thoughts was more effective on the autobiographical memory of elderly.

Abstract

Since imagination can help students' academic achievement and creativity and lead to the flourishing of talents and the development of ideas, the purpose of the present study was to validate the Liang, Su, Chang and Lin imagination questionnaire. The research method, correlation and statistical population of this study were all secondary school students in Ahvaz. 300 students (150 boys and 150 girls) were selected by multistage random sampling method. The Liang, Su, Chang and Lin imagination questionnaire were used to measure imagination. The results of exploratory factor analysis showed that 10 items in the form of two factors, creative imagination and productive imagination, constitute the imagination scale. Also Confirmatory factor analysis results showed that the components of creative imagination and productive imagination measured imagination with good power. The reliability and validity analysis of the imagination components showed that the questions were sufficiently accurate in measuring the imagination components. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were reported between 0.66 and 0.70 which indicated that both components have the necessary precision in determining the structure of imagination. The results of this study showed that the questionnaire has good validity and reliability and is suitable for imagination. Imagination Questionnaire has acceptable psychometric properties in Iranian students' community and researchers can use it as a valid tool in imagination measurement.

Abstract

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder that is characterized by abdominal pain, discomfort and change in the intestinal habits. The aim of this study was the comparison of brain oscillations features between patients with IBS and healthy control, speciallity in alpha frequency band by using rest-electroencephalography (EEG). 11 IBS patients (7 females and 4 male) and 11 healthy (7 females and 4 male), gender and age-matched, were selected and brain oscillations were recorded by a 64-channel EEG at rest in eye-closed condition. Alpha power, peak alpha frequency and frontal alpha asymmetry were calculated and analyzed by fast Fourier transform and independent t test. The results showed that in IBS group, the average of alpha was higher, the peak alpha frequency and frontal alpha asymmetry are lower than healthy control. Our findings indicated that difference between healthy control and IBS group in their cortical functions and generated brain wave oscillation, specifically in alpha frequency bands. Theses results may serve as a biomarker and prognostic tools for IBS treatments.

Abstract

Depression is the most common mental disorder that disrupts patients’ lives and imposes costs on society. Recently, the use of biomarkers in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders has been considered. The question is whether biomarkers derived from EEG are capable of separating depressed patients from healthy people. The objective of this study was to compare the power of different frequency bands in depressed and healthy individuals. The participants of this non-experimental study were selected using clinical criteria based on DSM-5 at Atieh Clinic in Tehran in 2016-2017 (29 women and 21 men who were depressed and 19 women and 31 men who were healthy). EEG was recorded in 19 channels and five frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha, beta and gamma) at rest (eyes closed) and during the Emtional Contineous Performance Task (ECPT). The results showed that at rest, the mean power was significantly higher in the depressed group only in the gamma band (Fz and Cz). Significant differences were also observed in theta (P8, O1 and O2), alpha (P4, P8 and O1), beta (Fp1, P3, Pz, and P4) and gamma (Fp1, Fp2, Fz and O1) during activity. Furthermore, mean powers in the depressed group were higher. It seems that EEG power during activity is a better discriminator than power in resting state and it could potentially be used as a biomarker for the diagnosis of depression.

Abstract

This study explores the necessity of conceptual change in teachers' professional development through creating knowledge building environment. In cognitive approaches to education the quality of education is considered to be a result of teachers' pedagogy and teachers' pedagogy is considered as a result of their cognition. Thereby the goal of many professional development programs is to educate teachers whose cognition is consistent with the latest research findings from cognitive and learning sciences. In this study the research synthesis was used to develop basic statements for salient characteristics of conceptual change framework. The analysis of the results showed that pedagogical belief system, teachers' preconceptions and how they align with scientific concepts, implicit theories, coherency of cognition, epistemological beliefs, metaconceptual awareness and experience-based belief system need to be considered in teachers' professional development. Finally, the possibility of creating knowledge building environment has been discussed.

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning is the ability of inductive and inferential reasoning with mathematical concepts that underlying cognitive variables play an important role in explaining it. The purpose of this study is to model the role of divided attention and working memory in mathematical reasoning with the mediation of mathematical knowledge and fluid intelligence in fourth grade elementary students. This study is non-experimental (descriptive) and a type of correlational study in which data were analyzed by Path Analysis. The statistical population of the research included all male fourth-graders of the primary schools in District 4 of Qom from which 213 students were randomly selected by two-stage cluster sampling. The study used different measures and instruments including the Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test-Second Edition (IVA-2 CPT) for measuring different types of attention, the Working Memory Index of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV), the Culture Fair Intelligence Test (CFIT), the knowing questions test and the mathematical reasoning questions test of TIMSS 2015. The findings of the study showed that all path coefficients are significant and appropriate model fit indices were obtained. The results indicate that working memory influenced by divided attention predicts mathematical reasoning with the mediation of mathematical knowledge and fluid intelligence. The research helps to develop in mathematics learning and cognitive rehabilitation of mathematical disorders by identifying the role of important cognitive variables in mathematical reasoning.

Abstract

Sleep has been shown to have an impact on the consolidation of motor memory in adults. However, sleep-dependent consolidation is not well-specified among children compared with adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of sleep on children's motor memory consolidation. The participants were 32 voluntary boys aging from 10 to 12 years old from Kerman, which had the necessary qualifications for entering the study. Serial Reaction Time Task was used to determine the implicit memory in children. The participants were allocated into a sleep group (8±1pm and 8±1am) and a wake group (8±1am and 8±1pm). Each group underwent five training blocks consisiting of 90 trails in each block in the acquisition phase. The retention (consolidation) and transfer tests were administered 12 hours after the acquisition phase in both groups. For analyzing data 2×2 and 4×2 Mixed ANOVA tests were used. The results in the retention and transfer tests showed that the reaction time was significantly different in two blocks (P > 0.05), but the effect of group and block interaction was not significant (P ≥ 0.05). The results also indicated that motor memory consolidation occurred in sleep and wake groups, however, it was not sleep-dependent. The findings revealed that children‘s performance was improved and enhanced not only through the training sessions, but after the learning phase in the offline period. In addition, the memory associated with a learned skill enhanced over time. It can be concluded that sleep was not the essential factor in the enhancement of offline learning and the transfer of sequential implicit motor task among children.

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate effectiveness of trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy on the reduction of brain-behavioral systems Sensitveness and experimental avoidance of veterans with PTSD. The current study is a semi-experimental one with pretest-posttest design with control group, The statistical population of this study included all Veterans in Marand in the year of 2019, among which 30 were selected as veterans with PTSD who referred to pouyameher Counseling and Psychological Services Center. Were selected through purposive sampling method and randomaly assigned to two groups of experimental and control. The data were collected using a posttrumatic stress disorder checklist (military version), Behavioural inhibition and behavioural activation system scales (BIS/BAS) and acceptance and action questionnaire-II (AAQ). Then, trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy were performed for 12 sessions (90 minutes in per session) each week for the experimental group. Data were analyzed by SPSS 20 using multiple covariance analysis. After controlling the effects of pretest, the mean scores of behavioural inhibition and behavioural activation system and experiential avoidance were significantly higher in the experimental group than the control group (p<0.001). Training trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy education can be effective reduces brain-behavioral systems and experiential avoidance of veterans with PTSD. Therefore, the design and implementation of intervention based on this treatments can be useful in educating and promoting mental health in veterans with PTSD.

Abstract

Emotion Recognition is the main component of social cognition. The failure in emotion recognition can jeopardize the survival of the human in the environment. Emotion recognition has various pattern in different cultures and nationalities. Some of the emotions would recognize as strong or weak. Also, there is diversity in emotion recognition pattern in some psychological disorders and neurological damages. Finding the Iranian emotion recognition pattern with a valid neuro-psychological test is the main purpose of this study. This is a descriptive-analytical study. Participants with the age of 24 to 40 years were initially tested in computer intelligence and progressive matrices of Raven-2 Then, for 88 subjects who had obtained a normal score in the RAVEN-2 test, the excitement recognition subtest was taken from the Cambridge Neuro-Psychological test automated battery (CANTAB). The correct response of participants to each of the six emotions used for analysis. The average percentage of correct responses to each of the six emotions has been analysis by SPSS statistical software. The normal distribution and spherical condition exist among the accumulated data. The maximum rate of correct responses was 75.83% related to happy emotion, sad 70.00%, Surprise 68.48%, disgust 47.84%, angry 42.54%, and fear 38.26%. Iranians recognized happy emotions better than the other emotions and fear was the lees recognized emotion. The finding of this study can affect the evaluation of cognitive elements in the particular society like Iran and can identify the most cognitive abilities and inabilities in people. The result of this research deduces striking findings that can lead the evaluation of cognitive, social people of Iran.

Abstract

Mindfulness is one of the effective interventions in improving executive functions. Although this intervention is well documented for adults, but it is less addressed for children, while children with attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder Executive functions are problematic. The purpose of this study is to Designing, developing and validating a psycho-educational program of empowerment based on mindfulness-cognitive for reduce behavioral symptoms and improve executive function in children with attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder. The present study is of the fundamental type, which is in two parts, In the first for designing and development stages was a descriptive - analytic method with a configurative synthesis approach In the second stage For program validation, along with the use of face validity method, content validity method was used quantitatively and Qualitatively method with a panel of 10 experts and Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI). The minimum and maximum CVRs for each item or component of the program were calculated as 0/73 and 1, respectively. Also the minimum and maximum CVIs for each item or component of the program were calculated as 0/80 and 1, respectively. Finally, the average content validity index (S-CVI/Ave) for the entire program was calculated as 0/91. This research leads to the preparation of an educational-therapeutic program in three sections: 1- basics, 2- external awareness and 3- internal awareness, which includes the sub-elements of strengthening attention, concentration, awareness of emotions, thoughts, tasks, purpose and impulses. Be. This educational-therapeutic program includes 16 sessions for children and 3 sessions for parents, 120 cards and 20 educational worksheets. The psycho educational program of empowerment based on mindfulness- cognitive for  reduce behavioral symptoms and improve executive function in children with attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder has appropriate face and content validity, and has a useful validity for educational, clinical and research uses.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of computer cognitive empowerment on the attentional functions, concentration and cognitive effort of the elderly. Metods This study was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design with a control group. Participants were 30 elderly people who were selected by convenience sampling method and randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups (Each group includes 15 people). Instruments included Captain's Log cognitive software and D2 test. Data analysis was performed using analysis of covariance. Data analysis using analysis of covariance showed that there was a significant difference between the mean scores of pre-test and post-test in the experimental and control groups (p <0.001). The results of this study show that computer cognitive empowerment can be used as an effective method to improve attention, concentration and cognitive effort in the elderly.

Abstract

Time perception is one of the important cognitive functions of the brain, and it refers to the mental sense of time by a person. This ability not only affects all human activities but also affects our mood and emotions. The present study was applied in a semi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test for two experimental and control groups. Subjects were 40 men and women (20 males and 20 females), which were selected by available sampling from bachelor's and master's degrees and divided into two peer control and experimental groups based on gender and education. All subjects were tested by production time task of 30 and 60 seconds by chronometer before and after the intervention. The experimental group was exposed to induction of three stages of negative, positive mood, and anxiety state, and the control group were tested by the same method in neutral state. The results of variance analysis with repeated measures in the production time task showed, individuals in positive mood and anxiety estimates time faster than neutral state, and also time perceived faster in positive mood in compare to anxiety state. Furthermore, individuals in the Negative mood perceived time slower than neutral state. Based on the result of this study, it can conclude that people experience time faster in positive mood and anxiety state, while in negative mood, people experience time slower.

Abstract

Objective: Working memory executive deficits have a role in maintaining Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms including flashbacks and reexperiencing. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to compare the visual and verbal Proactive Interference in trauma-exposed individuals with and without PTSD. 
Method: In this retrospective study, we recruited subjects through the purposive sampling method. We compared 30 survivors of road traffic accidents with PTSD with 30 trauma-exposed individuals without PTSD in terms of visual and verbal Proactive Interference. Measuring tools included the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder semi-structured Interview for DSM-V, the Beck Depression Inventory-II and the Recent Probes Task. Data were analyzed using mixed repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) in SPSS-21 software.
Results: Subjects of the PTSD group reported higher levels of visual and verbal Proactive Interference than the control group. Moreover, patients with PTSD indicated higher deficiencies in visual working memory than verbal working memory.
Conclusion: Patients with PTSD show deficiencies in controlling proactive interference that should be taken into consideration through their treatment procedure.

Abstract

Risk preference, the degree of tendency to take risk, has a fundamental role at individual and social health and is divided to risk seeker and risk averse. Therefore, the study of neural corelates of risk preferences is essential at the field of psychology and psychiatry. The current study aimed to examine and compare an ERP component named P300 between subjects with different risk preferences.
Method: 28 people placed in two groups of risk seeker and risk averse (14 each group). Subjects performed simple gambling task. ERP data were processed by MATLAB software and ERPlab. Repeated measurement ANOVA was used to analyze data.
Results: analysis of behavioral data presented that risk seekers selected low risk option more than high risk, but there was no significant difference of reaction time between groups. ERP analysis showed a significant decrease of P300 amplitude in risk seekers compared to risk averse when selecting high risk option. This result shows the importance of the differences in dopaminergic and motivational pathways of risk seekers during reward processing compared to healthy and risk-averse groups. Based on this result, it may be possible to consider the P300 component as a suitable indicator in clinical evaluations.

Abstract

The temporo-parietal junction is a key region in the theory of mind process. Numerous brain imaging studies have demonstrated its involvement in the mentalizing process and its under-activation in autism. This study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between rTPJ activation and implicit mentalizing in autism spectrum disorder. This study is a single-blind Quasi-experimental study with a repetitive measures design. Nine children and adolescents with autism were recruited by convenience sampling method using Gilliam autism rating scale (GARS), Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), and Stanford-Binet (SB). Afterward, they were assigned to three randomly ordered stimulation sessions: cTBS, iTBS, and sham. Immediately after each session indexes related to the subject’s implicit mentalizing were measured by a computer-based task. Repeated-measures ANOVA results demonstrated that the active stimulation sessions improved implicit mentalizing compared to sham sessions. It seems that there is a causal relation between rTPJ activation and implicit mentalizing.

Abstract

Multiple sclerosis is a de-myelinating inflammatory condition of the central nervous system that is often thought of as an autoimmune disorder. These patients suffer from extensive cognitive impairments such as poor attention and concentration and memory and processing speed; Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the anodic effect of direct cortical electrical stimulation (tDCS) on sustained attention performance in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in a pretest-posttest design with a control group. For this purpose, 32 patients with MS were selected using available sampling method and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The intervention consisted of 10 sessions of direct electrical stimulation during which patients were divided into two groups, one group received real stimulation and the other group received sham stimulation or sham. The research instruments were the use of RTI and RVP subtests in CANTAB test. Data analysis was performed based on independent and dependent t-test to compare pre-test and post-test scores in experimental and control groups. The results showed an improvement in sustained attention and processing speed in the experimental group at a significant level of 0.05. Therefore, we conclude that transcranial electrical stimulation of the brain improves sustained attention deficit and speed of response in patients with MS.

Abstract

This research aimed to compare the effectiveness of mindfulness-based socio-emotional learning program with/and without Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on sustained attention and response inhibition in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. This research was a semi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The statistical population included all students aged 11 to 14 who referred to child and adolescent counseling centers in Khoy city in 2021-2022 year. 45 people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder of the mixed type were selected from among those who refer to the treatment centers by the purposeful sampling method and randomly replaced in two experimental groups and one control group. The first experimental group received the mindfulness-based socio-emotional learning program combined with Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and the second experimental group received the mindfulness-based socio-emotional learning program for 8 weeks, but the control group did not receive any intervention. All participants were measured before and after the training using continuous performance test and GO/NO-GO test. For data analysis, multivariate covariance analysis was used in SPSS program. Data analysis showed that mindfulness-based socio-emotional learning combined with Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation compared to the other two groups and mindfulness-based socio-emotional learning compared to the control group were more effective on sustained attention and response inhibition. According to the findings, it can be suggested that the mindfulness-based socio-emotional learning program combined with Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation is an effective intervention to improve the cognitive functions of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
