Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching critical thinking based on the Powell-Elder model on improving the cognitive and self-efficacy of teens in Tehran.
Method: The research method was an applied and experimental type (post-test pre-test with control group). The statistical population consisted of all adolescents aged 13 to 16 years old in District 2 of Tehran. Data were analyzed by using a sampling method for 40 primary school students in Spring school as a sample group. A randomized trial was performed on 20 subjects in the experimental group and 20 in the control group. The data gathering tool was a Cognitive Distortion Questionnaire (Abdollahzadeh and Salar, 2010), Self-Efficacy Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (SEQ-C) (2001). The experimental group was placed under the teaching of Powell-Alder Critical Thinking for 9 consecutive 90-minute sessions. Data were analyzed by multivariate covariance statistical tests using SPSS software.
Results: The results showed that there was a significant (P> 0.05) critical thinking education on reduction of cognitive distortions and increasing self-efficacy in adolescents in Tehran.
Conclusion: Considering the importance of the role of critical thinking on self-efficacy and cognitive distortions, school curricula should be organized in such a way as to rethink curriculum planning and curriculum in order to find ways to develop adolescents themselves and plan to prevent cognitive impairment.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of combined cognitive rehabilitation interventions (computer and manual) on improving the speed of information processing and improving the mental status variables (MMSE) in women with MS. This research was conducted with pre-test and post-test design with two month follow-up. Twenty two women with MS were selected by available sampling method and randomly assigned to two groups of 12, and the experimental group received cognitive rehabilitation training and the intervention group did not receive any intervention. All participants of the first and last sessions were evaluated by MMSE and Auditory Sequence Test (PASAT). The research was conducted in 21 sessions in Arak and data were analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance analysis with repeated measurements using SPSS-24 software.The findings showed that the main effect of the time factor (pre-test, post-test, follow-up) on the selected score was significant. Conclusion: Manual cognitive rehabilitation is effective in improving the selective attention of female patients with multiple sclerosis. It is recommended that these interventions be used to improve the information processing speed and the psychological state of women with MS.

Abstract

The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of Captain Log cognitive rehabilitation software on attention and visual spatial and auditory active memory of adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This research was conducted as an experiment with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group with a one-month follow-up. The statistical population of the current study consisted of all adults aged 18 to 40 with ADHD who referred to the clinics of the 2nd district of Tehran in 2022, first a clinic was selected purposefully, then the number of 24 patients of this clinic was randomly selected. They were assigned in two experimental groups (12 people) and control group (12 people). To collect data, Barclay's Adult ADHD Rating Scale, Black's Chair Test, Wechsler's Working Memory Test, Integrated Visual Auditory Performance Test, and Captain Log cognitive software were used to collect data. The experimental group underwent cognitive rehabilitation intervention of Captain Log for one month (12 sessions of 45 minutes). The results of the analysis of variance with repeated measurements showed that the cognitive rehabilitation training of the Captain Log software is effective on the attention and active visual and auditory memory of adults with ADHD and it is suggested that this software be used in neuropsychological rehabilitation clinics, universities and jobs that require It should be used for attention and high active memory.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation on improving selective attention and working memory in elderly women with mild Alzheimer's disease. It was a quasi-experimental study with randomized allocation study with pre-test and post- test and two months' follow up with control group. The population in this study was all women with mild Alzheimer's in Association of Protection of Alzheimer's patients in Arak in 2023-2024. The group was comprised of 36 patients with mild Alzheimer were selected by available sampling. They were randomly divided into experimental, control and Placebo groups (12 patients in each group.The experimental group was trained by computer-based cognitive rehabilitation; the Placebo group received physical rehabilitation intervention, and the control group received no intervention. All participants were evaluated in the first and the last sessions by the STROOP and PASAT Tests. The investigation was done during 21 sessions (5 months) in Arak' Association of Protection of Alzheimer's patients. Data was analyzed by repeated measures and multivariate analysis with SPSS-24 software. Results showed that the main effect of time (pretest, post-test, follow up) is significant on working memory (nη2 =0.583) and Selected Attention scores (nη2=0.720). Also the effect of time interaction in a group is significant on working memory scores (nη2=0.443) and selected attention (nη2=0.604).  Conclusion: cognitive rehabilitation is effective on improvement of working memory and selected attention of women with mild Alzheimer's cognitive deficits. Therefore, it is recommended to use this therapeutic intervention in clinical centers in conjunction with other methods.
