Abstract

Employees expect respect from their co-workers and supervisors and guarantee of job security which is appropriate for their efforts in the workplace. Also, those with overcommitment to work need to be more supported. A set of these variables are included in the effort-reward imbalance model. The objectives of this study were to assess validity of the ERI model and its effects on fatigue, emotional exhaustion, physical health and psychosomatic complaints. To test validity of ERI model, a sample of 235 personnel of an industrial company in Isfahan, Iran, was selected. To measure predictor variables, ERI questionnaire (Zurlo, Pes & Siegrist, 2010) was used. To measure criterion variables Including fatigue, emotional exhaustion, physical health and psychosomatic complaints, fatigue scale (Chalder & et al,1993),emotional exhaustion scale(Malach,1998),Physical health scale (Hilderbrandt & et al, 1991) and psychosomatic complaints scale(Driken,1969) were used respectively.  Factor analysis of ERI scale elicit four subscale namely job security, respect, effort and overcommitment with favorable stability. The results showed that there was a positive relation between two subscales of respect and job security and criterion variables. There was also a negative relation between two subscales of effort and overcommitment and criterion variables. The results of this study can be of prime importance for the improvement of personnel’s health in the industrial environments.

Abstract

This study has been conducted to investigate the effectiveness of group cognitive behavioral therapy for severity of pain and mental health in individuals with back pain. This is a quasi-experimental research and posttest-pretest, control group design is used. Of women with chronic back pain who came to Imam Khomeni Hospital and who consulted a physician in his surgery in 2011,30 women, having average age of 33 years and seven months, were selected randomly and were also put randomly into two groups of fifteen. All participants completed General Health Questionnaire(GHQ) and Quebec Back Pain Disability Scale  before and after intervention. After 12 sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy, t The results indicated that the back pain significantly decreased and mental health improved significantly, too. According to the findings of the study, it can be said that group cognitive behavioral therapy would lead to the improvement of bio- psychological components through affecting mechanisms involved in Melzack’s neuromatrix and changing psychological structures, as a mediator of pain. Therefore, group cognitive behavioral therapy is a useful intervention for reducing severity of pain, as well as increasing mental health

Abstract

Given the importance of emotional intelligence in mental health, the purpose of this study is meta-analysis of the studies which were conducted on the relationship between emotional intelligence and mental health. Through meta-analysis method, this study integrates the results of various studies and then determines the effect size of the relationship between emotional intelligence and mental health. To achieve this purpose, of 45 studies, 30 studies  accepted methodologically, were selected and meta-analysis was done on them. Research tool for the study was meta-analysis checklist The present study is based on 4858 participants and 32 effect sizes. The findings indicates that in general, the effect size of  emotional intelligence and mental health is 0/48. Furthermore, When emotional intelligence is evaluated as trait, it has stronger correlation with mental health(r=0/51) rather than when it is evaluated as ability(r=0/38).Therefore,according to the present study, it can be concluded that higher  emotional intelligence has correlation with better mental health.

Abstract

The aim of present study was to investigate the relationship between two holistic constructs of self-awareness, mindfulness and integrative self-knowledge, and their associations with physical, psychological, social and spiritual health problem. To do so, 249 Iranian university students,170 women and 79men,completed following scales: Mindfulness Attention Awareness (Brown & Ryan, 2003), Integrative Self-Knowledge (Ghorbani, Watson & Hargis, 2008), Biopsychosociospiritual inventory (Katerndahl& Oyiriaru, 2007), and Depression Anxiety Stress (Lovibond&Lovibond, 1995). The data showed that these two constructs of self-awareness are negatively associated with all aspects of health. The integrative self-knowledge also predicted all measures of health that are beyond the mindfulness. These results point toward the integrative and temporal nature of self- awareness processes and suggest a need for studying the direction and nature of relation between Self-awareness and health.

Abstract

The main aim of this study was to investigate the model of structural relations between neuroticism, academic stress and health behaviors among Iranian and Swedish students.199 students (100 Iranian and 99 Swedish) completed the Big Five Inventory-SV (BFI-SV, Rammstedt & John, 2007), the Academic Stress Questionnaire (ASQ, Zajacova, Lynch & Espenshade, 2005) and the Health Behavior Inventory (HBI, Broman, 1998). Relations between latent and observed variables in the conceptual Model were examined using structural equation modeling. The results of structural equation modeling showed that the global model had an acceptable fit to the data. In the global model, neuroticism and academic stress showed a significant positive relationship and the results of the global model indicated a significant negative relationship between neuroticism and academic stress with health behaviors. The results of the culture specificity of structural relations showed that structural relations were equivalent for the cultural groups. In sum, these findings through emphasizing the importance of the integration of trait and cultural psychology perspectives, retains heuristic value in designing studies, formulating hypotheses, and making theoretical refinements in the study of the structural relations between neuroticism, academic stress and health behaviors across cultures.

Abstract

This study has been carried out with the aim of studying and recognizing the role of attachment to God in Resilience and mental health of the parents of trainable mentally retarded children. In this descriptive, correlational research performed in 2010, 296 parents of trainable mentally retarded children were selected based on Morgan table and through stratified random sampling from the desired population and were then investigated. To collect the data three questionnaires were used: attachment to God, resiliency and checklist of behavioral signs. Analysis of the data through correlation coefficient and regression analysis showed that there was a positive meaningful relationship between secure attachment to God and resilience and mental health. Furthermore, there was a significant negative relationship between anxious, inevitable attachment to God and resilience and mental health. Also the result of regression analysis showed that the variable secure attachment to God can explain 70 percent of the variable resilience. Secure attachment to God had a significant positive relationship with resilience and mental health, and anxious and inevitable attachment to God had a significant negative relationship with resilience and mental health. Therefore it is likely to improve the individuals’ mental health by changing the quality of their attachment to God.

Abstract

The current study investigated the causal relationship between the sense of coherence (SOC) and psychological hardiness, coping strategies and mental health. 405 women from Ahvaz City, with ages ranged between 25-55 years participated in the study. Flensborg-Madsen et al.'s sense of coherence scale, Najarian et al.'s hardiness scale, Moss and Billings stress coping strategies, and Godberg's mental health scale were administered. The results of path analysis indicated that the proposed model which linked sense of coherence, psychological hardiness, coping strategies and mental health fitted the data. Direct and non-direct path coefficients of the sense of coherence and mental health were also significant. Furthermore, path coefficients of the direct effect of hardiness on emotion-centered coping strategies, SOC on emotion-centered coping strategies and emotion-centered coping strategies on mental health were also significant. Findings indicated that the SOC and psychological hardiness had a determining role in mental health. Also, causal modeling path analysis demonstrated that some variables made their relationship complicated

Abstract

Purpose of the present study was to compare the hypochondria and the mental health of the mothers of children with the special needs and the mothers of normal children in Isfahan. It was a descriptive causative-comparison study and by using convenience sampling method, 90 mothers of disabled children (30 children with Down syndrome, 30 with autism and 30 with cerebral palsy) from the rehabilitation centers in the north of Isfahan were selected as the experimental group and by multistage random sampling method, 30 mothers of normal children of primary schools in Isfahan were selected as the control group. Ahwaz Hypo-chondriasis Test and Goldberg's General Health Questionnaire were applied to assess the participants' status and the gathered data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey test. Results revealed that, in general, there was a meaningful difference between the mothers of children with special needs and the mothers of normal children in terms of hypochondria and mental health. Moreover, paired comparisons indicated that there was a significant difference between the mothers of disabled and normal children in terms of the mental health. Furthermore, in comparison to the mothers of normal children, there was a significant difference between the mothers of children with cerebral palsy and autism in terms of hypochondria however, there was no significant difference between the mothers of children with Down syndrome and the mothers of normal children in this term. According to the findings of this research, stresses resulting from having disabled children could endanger the mothers' mental and physical health and the specialists should consider this issue when they deal with such families.

Abstract

Research indicates that children of parents with chronic pain might be at risk of a variety of psychological, social and academic difficulties therefore, the present study aimed to investigate academic health among adolescent daughters of mothers with musculoskeletal chronic pain. In this study a group of 44 daughters of mothers with chronic pain were compared to matched control group of daughters of healthy mothers in variables of academic‌ health. The Study measure was Academic Health Self- Report Scales (AHS-SR), adapted from Healthy Pathways Child-Report Scales (HPC-RS, Bevans,et al, 2010). In order to analyze the data, a set of descriptive and inferential statistics including independent t-test, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were applied. Study results indicated that daughters of mothers with chronic pain exhibit lower levels of academic health in comparison with children in the control group and this suggests that having a mother in pain adversely impacts children’s academic function and suppress their capabilities. This study suggests that children of mothers with chronic pain might be at risk of poor academic health and lower educational functioning compared with children of healthy parents. It seems that family interventions or psycho-education would help child and mother to have a better understanding of chronic pain as a phenomenon and to apply coping strategies to prevent its interactional impacts.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to designing and testing a model of some precedents and outcomes of work ability index. The variables in the model were arranged in three parts: precedents (personal resources, life management strategies and job-related stressors), outcomes (health- related quality of life and job performance) of work ability index. The participants were 320 employees of NISOC, in Ahvaz, who were selected by stratified random sampling method. Of this sample, 72 percent were men and average age was 41 years. Instruments used in this study were work ability index, life management strategies, general self-efficacy, optimism, coping skill, effort-reward imbalance, demand-control, health related quality of life and job performance questionnaires. Fitness of the proposed model was examined through structural equation modeling (SEM), using SPSS-16 and AMOS-16 software packages. The indirect effects were tested using the bootstrap procedure in Preacher and Hayes (2008) SPSS Macro program for mediation. Findings indicated that the proposed model fit the data. Better fit and more meaningful results obtained by correlating the errors of two paths. All of indirect effects were significant.

Abstract

This study examined the relation between religious faith and gratitude variables with the severity of mental disorders symptoms. Participants were 300 students of Shiraz University who were selected via cluster random sampling method. Measures were Islamic – Iranian Gratitude, Religious Faith, and SCL-90 questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive and multiple regression methods. The results showed that almost all gratitude and faith subscales could predict the severity of all mental disorders subscales of the SCL-90. Faith and gratitude had a broad effect on interpersonal sensitivity and depression subscales. Internal gratitude predicted the severity of all mental disorders and among religious faith subscales, purposefulness, goodwill and self-control predicted the severity of some mental disorders symptoms greater and broader than other subscales. Religious faith and gratitude may be considered as general factors which are effective in reducing a wide range of mental disorders symptoms. Results indicate that if being religious causes internal changes and develops internal gratitude, purposefulness, goodwill and self-control in an individual, it would prevent mental disorders.

Abstract

Although in the literature of the study the concepts of health and disease have been considered deeply dependent on each other, it seems that to differentiate them , indexes are needed which make clear both similar cultural characteristics and different cultural characteristics .In this study, an attempt was made to provide a new description of the classification of the mental health and disease and to investigate the role of different feelings in differentiating health from disease in Iranian collectivistic culture and Swedish individualistic culture. In this study, of a group of Iranian students (n=296) and of a group of Swedish students (n=310), a sample of students were selected. Results of the study showed that in the Iranian society there was a relationship between the mental health and balance affect while in the Swedish society there was a more significant relationship between the mental health and positive affect. It seems that in the typology of healthy and sick people there are four flourishing, languishing, trouble and symptomatic groups and that the positive and balance affects can differentiate these groups.

Abstract

Objective: This study examined the mediating effect of health-promoting lifestyle behaviors on the relationship between internal/external religious orientations and perceived social support with emotional well-being and life satisfaction among university students. Method: On a sample consisting of 410 students (157 male 253 female), the Intrinsic/Extrinsic Religious Orientation Scale(I/EROS), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II (HPLP-II), the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS)were administrated. Structural equation modeling was used to assess the mediating effects model of health-promoting lifestyle behaviors on the relationship between internal/external religious orientations and perceived social support with emotional well-being and life satisfaction among university students. Results: Results showed that there is a positive significant correlation between internal religious orientation and social support with healthy lifestyle behaviors and a positive non-significant correlation between external religious orientations with health-promoting lifestyle behaviors. Results also indicated that there is a positive significant correlation between health-promoting lifestyle behaviors with positive affect and life satisfaction and a negative significant correlation between health-promoting lifestyle behaviors with negative affect. Results of structural equation modeling also showed that the relationship between internal religious orientation and social support with positive and negative affect and life satisfaction is mediated fully by health-promoting lifestyle behaviors. In this hypothesized model, internal/external religious orientations and perceived social support factors accounted for 29% of the variance in health-promoting lifestyle behaviors. Also, health-promoting lifestyle behaviors accounted for 64%, 16% and 38% of the variance in positive affect, negative affect and life satisfaction variables, respectively. Conclusion: In sum, these finding show that the part of available variance in emotional well-being and life satisfaction in the context of prediction these cognitive and emotional components by internal/external religious orientations and perceived social support, accounted for persons' health-promoting lifestyle behaviors.

Abstract

The aim of the present study was identifying tendency to cigarette smoking based on the health believes, attitudes, subjective norms and resiliency among university students. It was a cross-sectional study which was conducted on 361 university students. Two questionnaires, one based on the health believe model and the theory of reasoned action, and the other about resiliency were completed. Data were analyzed through SPSS and Partial Least Squares (PLS) packages. The main study (conducted after pilot study) showed that 16/66% of 108 subjects who ever smoked, tried it before age 10. All friends of more than 10/5% of them (108 subjects) smoked cigarettes. Structural equation modeling showed that the conceptual model could predict tendency to tobacco smoking among university students. The highest coefficient was between attitudes and smoking. Subjective-norm was the next. The results confirm previous findings. The components couldcontribute in a reliable research model for studying risky B., smoking. The HBM might work better while is associated with attitudes andSN.Association of complementary elements (resiliency) with the model might be useful
