Abstract

The study on body image has grown steadily over the recent few decades. Since many studies investigated the relationship between body image and psychosocial functions, this study aimed at investigating the relationship between body image and adjustment. The subjects of the study included 400 male and female high school student who were selected through cluster sampling. The data were collected by using Physical Self-Description Questionnaire and Bell Adjustment Inventory, and the obtained data were then analyzed by both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicated that there was a significant relationship between body image and adjustment. The results were representative of the fact there was a significant difference in body image of male and female students, but there was no significant difference in adjustment of both male and female students. In general, the findings demonstrated that positive body image would lead to more adjustment behaviors through developing the sense of higher self worth.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to study the effect of nose cosmetic surgery on girls’ self-esteem and body image. Twenty two nose cosmetic surgery candidates and twenty two others as control group participated in this study. They were chosen by available sampling method. They answered to the multi-dimensional questionnaire regarding relation between self and their body and to the Rosenberg self-esteem questionnaire. The nose cosmetic surgery candidates and control group responded to our questionnaires at two stages, respectively. Results showed that, two ‘self-esteem’ and ‘body image’ variables did not show significant change before and after the surgery. But one of the minor scale factors (satisfaction of parts of the body) was seen to be related to the self-esteem.

Abstract

The use of virtual social networks has increased among Iranians in the recent years. The aim of this study was to compare some of the reasons of tendency to use these social networking sites (body image satisfaction, emotion regulation and loneliness) among male and female students. Research method of the
current study was a causal-comparative one. The study population included all male and female students of Kharazmi University living in its dormitory (Karaj unit) in the academic year 2014-2015; of this population 97 students (48 boys and 49 girls) were selected through convenience sampling method. In order to collect data, the short form of social and emotional loneliness scale for adults, body image rating scale and emotion regulation subscale of emotional intelligence questionnaire were used. The results of the current study showed that the two groups had no significant difference in body image satisfaction; however, average of emotion regulation, general loneliness, social loneliness and emotional loneliness was significantly higher in the female group. So it seems that the emotion regulation and loneliness have a role in the more use of social networks among girls.

Abstract

Body image is one of the primary elements constructing each person’s personality, which relies on the perception and feelings everyone has about their body. One of the influential factors affecting the evolution of body image is cyberspace. This study is aimed to investigate the influential factors on students’ body image as cyberspace users. The present research has applied a qualitative research approach, and has also examined the theoretical foundations. The research instrument was a semi-structured interview, through which 19 students aged from 8 to 13 were chosen as the sampling group via a three- staged codification process: open, central and selective process. Open codes included 49 concepts, and central codes were comprised of 9 categories as: the potentiality of being influenced by people, waning religious beliefs, lack of knowledge, the impact of extreme beautification (plastic surgery), the influence of publicity, cultural differences’ impact, the widespread usage of cyberspace, psychological factors and evolution of values. In the contemporary period, cyberspace has changed cultural norms about gender and body definition. If people follow the devised norms by cyberspace about body image, the developmental process of body image becomes more distorted.

Abstract

Understanding the actual - ideal body discrepancy in individuals makes them use coping strategies to manage the distracting experiences of their body image. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of body discrepancy with body image maladaptive coping strategies (experiential avoidance and appearance fixation) with the mediating role of self-compassion and body shame. Sample consisted of 300 female undergraduate students of Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz who were selected by multi -stage random sampling. In order to collect information, we used the body-image ideals questionnaire, objectified body cnsciousness scale, body image coping strategies inventory, self-compassion scale (short form). The conceptual model of the present study was analyzed using path analysis method. The results indicated that the path coefficient of body discrepancy to experiential avoidance was not significant, but the path coefficient of body discrepancy to appearance fixation was significant. Furthermore, the path coefficient of self -compassion to body shame was significant. Also, indirect path of body discrepancy to body image maladaptive coping strategies through self-compassion and body shame was significant. Finding of this study is consistent with compassion focused therapy showed the role of shame and compassion as emotional aspect of body image disturbance.

Abstract

Body image and sex desire are among the most important psychological issues for women.The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive hypnosis therapy on body image and marital satisfaction of women. This research was quasi-experimental design with pre-test-post-test-follow-up and control group. The statistical population of the study included women suffered from body image and sexual dissatisfaction who attended Babolsar Eltiam counseling center in 2021.From this population, 22 people  selected by available samoling method and then were randomly selected  into experimental and control gropups (each included 11 people). Littleton Body Image Scale (BICI) and Meston & Trapnell Sex Satisfaction Scale(SSSW), were the research instruments. The experimental group received cognitive hypnotherapy weekly for 11 sessions of 90 minutes, while the control group did not receive any training The results of  analysis of covariance illustrated that cognitive hypnosis therapy was effective in increasing sex desire(F -19/54 P <0.001) and improving body image (F = 8.962 P < 0.005) in women. It was concluded that the method of cognitive hypnosis therapy can increase accuracy, concentration, and awareness through eliminating misconceptions and consequently increase sex desire and improve women's body image. and it is recommended to be used as therapeutic method.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to investigate addiction to virtual social networks with the mediating role of harmful eating behaviors and negative body image in athletes. The method of this research is a correlational design based on the analysis of structural relationships. The statistical sample in this research was 309 athletes from Tehran in 1402. Research data were collected using the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (2016), Littleton's Body Image Fear Inventory (2005), Exercise Dependence Scale (2002), and Nutrition Attitude Test (1982). Questionnaires were also completed online. The findings showed that addiction to virtual social networks with the mediating role of harmful eating behaviors can predict sports addiction, but addiction to virtual social networks could not predict sports addiction with the mediating role of negative body image. According to the above results, we can understand the importance of harmful eating behaviors in the path of addiction to virtual networks and addiction to sports, and by targeting these components, we can help to improve addiction to sports.
