Abstract

Introduction:
Down syndrome is a genetic disease that affects parents and impairs the functioning of the family, especially the mother .Mothers of children with Down syndrome face many challenges.
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of group intervention based on acceptance and commitment on family protective factors, emotional and social loneliness and parenting stress in mothers of children with Down syndrome.
Method: The design of the present study was a quasi-experimental type of pretest-posttest and follow-up with a control group.
Results: The results showed that group intervention based on acceptance and commitment increases mothers' scores on family protective factors, reduces feelings of emotional and social loneliness and parenting stress (in the dimensions of parental confusion and dysfunctional parent-child interaction).
Conclusion: According to the research findings, it is suggested to use group intervention based on acceptance and commitment to improve value-based interactions and strategies in mothers of children with Down syndrome.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this article is to investigate the effectiveness of cognitive therapy group training based on mindfulness on academic vitality and social health. Method: Quantitative-applied research of an experimental type with a pre-test, post-test design with a control group, and the statistical population includes all female students of the first grade of high school in Bandar Anzali city, who were randomly divided into two groups of 20 people, controlled and tested. Martin and Marsh's (2008) academic vitality questionnaires, Keyes and Shapiro's (2004) social health questionnaires, as well as the mindfulness training protocol have been used as the intervention variable of the research for data collection tools. To test the hypotheses, univariate covariance analysis was used using SPSS software. Findings: The research results showed that mindfulness training is effective on academic vitality and social health. Conclusion: Mindfulness training improves the social health and academic vitality of female students.

Abstract

The aim of present study is determining the fit of the obsessive beliefs model based on social perception, theory of mind or mentalization, and empathy with the mediation of emotional regulation in a non-clinical population. The sample consisted of 400 adults aged 25 to 50 in Tehran selected by using the convenience sampling method. Data collection tools included OBQ Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire, the Emotion Recognition Task (ERT), Baron and Cohen’s (2001) Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, Baron-Cohen and Wheelwright's Empathy Quotient Scale (2004), and Kraaij and Garnefski's Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (2019). According to the results, the exogenous variables of social perception and empathy along with the mediator variable "positive emotion regulation strategies and negative emotion regulation strategies" had a significant effect on the criterion variable i.e. obsessive beliefs. Thus, social perception, empathy and positive emotion regulation strategies were able to predict obsessive beliefs. Among the path coefficients between research variables, the coefficients of the exogenous variable of mentalization on the criterion variable (obsessive beliefs) and negative emotional regulation strategies (as a mediating variable) had no significant effect. These findings have many practical implications both for prevention and providing more comprehensive and better treatments for obsessions.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the structural model of explaining social-emotional assets based on emotional intelligence and emotional reactivity with the mediating role of patience. The design of the present study was applied and correlational by structural equation modeling. Sample of the study were 625 (399 girls and 226 boys) were selected by cluster random sampling add answered the social-emotional assets and resilience scale, emotional intelligence and emotional reactivity questionnaires and patience scale. Pearson correlation methods and structural equation modeling were used to analyze the data. The results showed that both the variables of Patience and emotional intelligence had direct and significant effects on social-emotional assets and the mediating role of the patience in the relationship between emotional intelligence and emotional reactivity with social-emotional assets was significant, too. Overall, the results of this project showed that emotional intelligence and emotional reactivity have significant effects on social-emotional assets with mediating role of patience. So, fostering of this moral virtue could beneficial for reinforcement of social-emotional assets.

Abstract

The present study was conducted with the aim of comparing the effectiveness of cognitive therapy based on mindfulness and schema therapy on mental rumination and social anxiety of women with practical obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The current research method was semi-experimental with pre-test, post-test and follow-up. The statistical population of the research included all women with obsessive-compulsive disorder who referred to the counseling centers of Mashhad in 1402, based on the entry and exit criteria, 48 people were selected as a sample using the purposeful-available sampling method and randomly divided into two experimental groups. and a control group were assigned. Subjects were evaluated using Hoeksma and Maro (1991) rumination questionnaires and Wells' (1994) social anxiety questionnaires in the pre-test, post-test and follow-up stages. The results of mixed analysis of variance showed that the difference Significance between intervention groups with control in mental rumination and social anxiety of women with obsessive compulsive symptoms, the presence of medication, cognitive therapy based on mindfulness and schema therapy has led to the reduction of mental rumination and social anxiety. Also, schema therapy is more effective than cognitive therapy based on mindfulness in mental rumination.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between the desire to help others and resilience with growth after trauma with assessing the moderating role of guilt related to trauma in people with a history of covid-19 disease in close relative. For this purpose, 189 people who had one of their relatives admitted to the special care department of the hospital due to the covid-19 disease in the last six months were selected in an accessible method and completed the post-traumatic growth, resilience, trauma related guilt and altruism questionnaires. Based on the results of multiple regression analysis, trauma related guilt did not play a moderating role in the relationship between resilience and prosocial behaviors. In contrast, trauma-related guilt had a moderating role in the relationship between post-traumatic growth and willingness to help others. The conclusion from the findings of the present study can be indicative of the role of interpersonal and intrapersonal factors in promoting adaptation and even growth of people following traumatic experiences.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to investigate addiction to virtual social networks with the mediating role of harmful eating behaviors and negative body image in athletes. The method of this research is a correlational design based on the analysis of structural relationships. The statistical sample in this research was 309 athletes from Tehran in 1402. Research data were collected using the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (2016), Littleton's Body Image Fear Inventory (2005), Exercise Dependence Scale (2002), and Nutrition Attitude Test (1982). Questionnaires were also completed online. The findings showed that addiction to virtual social networks with the mediating role of harmful eating behaviors can predict sports addiction, but addiction to virtual social networks could not predict sports addiction with the mediating role of negative body image. According to the above results, we can understand the importance of harmful eating behaviors in the path of addiction to virtual networks and addiction to sports, and by targeting these components, we can help to improve addiction to sports.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of using social networks in the relationship between authoritarian and permissive parenting styles and academic procrastination in first secondary school students. The research was of the correlation type, and the statistical population included all the students of the first secondary level of Ashnoye city in 1401. In this study, 339 people (170 girls and 169 boys) were selected as a statistical sample using the multi-stage cluster random sampling method. In order to collect information, Bamrind's 1967 parenting styles (PSI), Solomon and Rothblum's academic procrastination (PASS) 1984, and Jahan Bani's social networks (2017) were used. The data were analyzed by covariance analysis and structural equation modeling. The results of the current research regarding the mediation of the use of social networks in the relationship between authoritarian parenting style and academic procrastination showed that authoritarian parenting style not only directly but also indirectly and with the mediation of the use of social networks on students' academic procrastination. It has an effect.

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to analyze the structural relationships of treatment adherence based on emotional self-awareness in patients with psoriasis and to examine the mediating role of perceived social support. This research employed a descriptive-correlational design using structural equation modeling. The statistical population included psoriasis patients referred to three specialized dermatology hospitals in Tehran. Convenience sampling was used, and ultimately, 250 psoriasis patients meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. Various tools were utilized for data collection, including the Treatment Adherence Questionnaire (Ziaei, 2011), the Perceived Social Support Questionnaire (Zimet et al., 1988), and the Emotional Self-Awareness Questionnaire (Reef et al., 2007).The results of the structural equation modeling analysis indicated that emotional self-awareness has a direct and significant effect on treatment adherence in patients with psoriasis. Additionally, perceived social support and concerns about body image also had a direct impact on treatment adherence. Furthermore, the findings revealed that emotional self-awareness indirectly and significantly affects treatment adherence through the mediation of body image concerns and perceived social support.These results highlight the importance of considering psychological and social dimensions, such as emotional self-awareness and social support, in the treatment process of patients with psoriasis, as they can improve treatment adherence and therapeutic outcomes.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate efficacy of emotion-focused therapy on impulsivity, social adjustment, and social networking addiction in adolescents who attempted suicide. The present study design was a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test with a control group. statistical sample of this study was 30 people who were selected through purposive sampling and then randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups (15 people). The measurement tools included Barat's Impulsivity Questionnaire, Sinha and Singh's Social Adjustment Questionnaire, and Mobile-Based Social Networking Addiction Questionnaire. Emotion-focused therapy was implemented by a psychologist for experimental group. In order to analyze the data in this study, multivariate analysis of covariance test was used to examine hypotheses. results showed that after removing effects of pretest, there was a significant difference in the linear combination of dependent variables between the two groups studied (Wilks' Lambda = 0.780, F = 3.23, 90.432, p = 0.001, and eta squared = 0.922). Univariate analysis of covariance tests also showed that adolescents in the experimental group showed significant improvement in posttest scores of impulsivity, social adjustment, and social media addiction compared to adolescents in control group. Therefore, it can be concluded that emotion-focused therapy can be an effective treatment for adolescents who attempt suicide

Abstract

With the revolution in the world of computer networks and the evolution of new technologies, online games have replaced traditional physical games and video games. The present study aimed to conceptualize online game addiction in Iranian adolescents based on grounded theory through semi-structured interviews. The participants were 20 adolescent boys aged 13 to 18 years old in Tehran who were selected through theoretical purposive sampling. MAXQUDA-10 software and Strauss and Corbin's (1998) thematic analysis approach including open, axial, selective, and theoretical coding were used to analyze the data and extract themes. The results of the interview analysis showed that the categories of filling leisure time, personal, communication, fame, and wealth acquisition were the most important causes of online game addiction in adolescents. The categories of personal, work, and marketing, and perceived social support constituted important areas of online game addiction. Improving attention and concentration, controlling anger, being cheerful and relieving depression, making friends, becoming professional, and becoming famous were the positive consequences of online gaming addiction, and ultimately, lack of time for daily activities, academic and personal decline, damage to physical health, and not being understood by the family constituted the negative consequences of online gaming addiction. It can be concluded that online gaming addiction in adolescents is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon that is influenced by individual, social, and family factors.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions of acceptance and commitment and mindfulness on the biological, psychological and social indicators of women with human papillomavirus.This study was a semi-experimental method with a pre-test-post-test design and a two-month follow-up period. The statistical population included all female patients with human papilloma virus who lived in Dubai and visited Al-Shafa Behavioral Diseases Clinic .Through purposive sampling, 45 subjects were selected and randomly allocated to either the ACT, mindfulness or the control group (n = 15 per group). Then the subjects of the two experimental groups were subjected to training based on acceptance and commitment therapy and training based on mindfulness for 8 sessions of 90 minutes.  The data collection tool was DASS-21 (1993), Marlowe and Crown's (1996) Social Desirability Scale. the results, a tangible difference was spotted between the groups in the pre-and post-test stage and considering time impact on the mean virous (η2=0.888, F=222.695, p<0.001), depression (η2=0.953, F=562.146, P<0.001), anxiety (η2=0.760, F=88.843, P<0.001), stress (η2=0.953, F=405.704, P<0.001), and social desirability (η2=0.26, F=9.820, P<0.001). In general, the results showed that both methods of educational intervention were effective in women.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of exercise interventions on reducing aggressive behaviors and to understand the associated biological, neural, and psychosocial mechanisms. Conducted as a systematic review and analysis of selected studies, primarily focusing on moderate to high-intensity aerobic exercise, the research examined hormonal markers, neurostructural changes, and psychosocial outcomes related to aggression. Findings revealed that regular exercise reduces cortisol levels and modulates testosterone ratio, while increasing endorphin secretion and enhancing serotonergic function, which collectively contribute to decreased irritability and impulsivity. Furthermore, regular exercise promotes neuroplasticity, elevates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, and increases hippocampal volume, leading to significant improvements in prefrontal cortex function, crucial for impulse regulation and response inhibition. Psychosocially, group exercises strengthen social support, enhance self-efficacy, and improve conflict resolution skills, fostering sustained reduction in aggressive behaviors. These results indicate that multidimensional exercise interventions have a significant role in aggression reduction and mental health promotion, providing a strong foundation for developing therapeutic and rehabilitative programs.

Abstract

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescence is associated with persistent deficits in self-regulation, poor self-management skills, and increased social-emotional problems, including social anxiety. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based stress reduction program on self-management skills and social anxiety in adolescents with ADHD. The study was conducted in a quasi-experimental manner with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group and a two-month follow-up. The study population included adolescents aged 13 to 15 years with this disorder, 30 of whom were selected using a convenience method and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in eight 90-minute sessions of a mindfulness-based stress reduction program, while the control group was on a waiting list. The research instruments included the Adolescent Self-Management Questionnaire and the Adolescent Social Anxiety Scale, which were administered in three stages: pre-test, post-test, and follow-up. Data were analyzed using repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance. The results showed that the implementation of the mindfulness-based stress reduction program significantly increased self-management skills and significantly reduced social anxiety in the experimental group compared to the control group, and these effects remained largely stable at the two-month follow-up. Based on the findings, the mindfulness-based stress reduction program can be used as a complementary and effective intervention in improving cognitive-behavioral functions and reducing social-emotional problems in adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Abstract

Coronary heart disease is one of the most common heart diseases and the leading cause of death in the world, and its effective management requires comprehensive approaches beyond drug treatment. Self-care, as one of the key components in controlling this disease, in the context of social support, especially family support, can help improve the quality of life of patients and reduce repeated hospitalizations. The present study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of a family-centered health program on self-care in patients with coronary heart disease. This quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and three-month follow-up included 30 men with coronary heart disease who were randomly divided into two intervention groups (n=15) and control groups (n=15). The intervention group participated in eight weekly 90-minute sessions of a family-centered educational-support program, while the control group did not receive any educational intervention. The results showed that the family-centered health program significantly increased self-care behaviors in the intervention group compared to the control group, and these changes were maintained for three months after the intervention. These findings emphasize the importance of family participation in improving self-care in heart patients and indicate that family-centered interventions can be effective as a complement to drug treatments in the management of heart disease. The results of the study suggest the need to integrate these approaches into the health system and recommend to policymakers to provide the basis for the systematic implementation of family-centered programs.

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on academic burnout and social anxiety symptoms among female upper secondary school students. The study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group and a one-month follow-up. The statistical population consisted of female students attending public schools in Tehran, Iran, during the 2024–2025 academic year. Following an initial screening, 30 students with elevated levels of social anxiety were purposively selected and randomly assigned to either an experimental group or a control group.The experimental group participated in eight 90-minute sessions of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, while the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using the Adolescent Social Anxiety Scale and the Academic Burnout Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance.The results indicated that ACT significantly reduced social anxiety symptoms and academic burnout in the experimental group compared to the control group, and these effects were maintained at the one-month follow-up. Overall, the findings suggest that ACT, through enhancing psychological flexibility and reducing experiential avoidance, can improve students’ academic and social adjustment and may serve as an effective intervention within educational settings.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) on stress among female seventh-grade students with social anxiety in District 3 of Tehran. The present study was applied in terms of purpose and employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest and a control group. The statistical population comprised all female seventh-grade students with social anxiety in schools of District 3 of Tehran during the academic year 2025. The sample consisted of 20 students (10 in the experimental group and 10 in the control group) selected based on the cut-off score (50) of the Connor et al. (2000) Social Anxiety Scale and in coordination with school counselors, and were then randomly assigned to the two groups. Data collection instruments included the Connor et al. (2000) Social Anxiety Scale, the Lovibond and Lovibond (1995) Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the ISTDP intervention protocol based on Davanloo's (1990) approach. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 26 at both descriptive (mean, standard deviation) and inferential (analysis of covariance) levels. The results of analysis of covariance indicated that Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy had a significant effect on reducing stress in female students with social anxiety, and the results of the Bonferroni post hoc test showed that the mean stress scores of the experimental group in the posttest phase were significantly lower than those of the control group.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the impact of postmodern therapy and a gender-sensitive perspective on the social well-being of couples referring to counseling centers in Ilam. The research method involved a comparison between two therapeutic protocols using a repeated measures design with pre-test, post-test, and a three-month follow-up, including a control group. The statistical population consisted of all couples referring to counseling centers in Ilam during the second half of 2022. A sample of 45 individuals was selected using purposive sampling. Initially, the Marital Conflict Questionnaire was administered to 150 individuals referring to counseling and psychotherapy centers; subsequently, 45 individuals who obtained the highest scores were purposively selected. Data collection was conducted using Keyes’ Social Well-being Questionnaire (1998). Data analysis was performed using Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) via SPSS-26 software. Based on the results, the research hypothesis regarding a significant difference between postmodern therapy and the gender-sensitive perspective on couples’ social well-being was not confirmed. However, the key finding was that postmodern therapy had a significant effect on couples’ social well-being compared to the control group, whereas this effect was not significant for the gender-sensitive approach. Therefore, it appears that the postmodern approach has broader effectiveness in promoting the psychological and relational resources of couples.

Abstract

This review study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in reducing social anxiety among adolescents. A systematic search was conducted across Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, Magiran, and IranDoc using relevant keywords. Studies assessing MBCT’s impact on adolescent social anxiety with a PEDro score above 5 were included. From 43 identified articles, 6 met the inclusion criteria. Findings indicated that MBCT significantly reduces social anxiety in adolescents, though variations in methodology, sample size, and assessment tools were observed. These results underscore MBCT’s potential as an effective intervention for social anxiety. It is recommended that MBCT be integrated into school-based counseling and mental health programs. Further research with standardized methodologies is needed to explore MBCT’s efficacy across diverse cultural contexts.

Abstract

The present study aimed to analyze and compare the psychological profiles of two groups of traditional and industrial drug users, examining the differences in brain-behavioral systems, personality dimensions, and prosocial behavior tendencies. This causal-comparative study was conducted on 200 drug-dependent men (100 traditional drug users and 100 industrial drug users) who had referred to rehabilitation centers in Qom in 1404. The measurement tools included the Gray-Wilson Brain-Behavioral Systems Questionnaire, Cloninger Personality and Character Test, and the Revised Prosocial Behavior Scale. The findings from multivariate analysis of variance showed that industrial drug users scored significantly higher in the behavioral activation system and the approach and active avoidance subscales, while no significant differences were observed in the behavioral inhibition and conflict-avoidance systems. In terms of personality dimensions, the industrial group had higher scores in novelty seeking, harm avoidance, perseverance, self-direction, and self-transcendence, but traditional users showed superiority in the reward dependence dimension and indicators of social behavior (altruism and compliance). The results indicate that the industrial substance use pattern is associated with a more impulsive personality profile and a deeper breakdown in social functioning, while traditional users maintained social bonds and responsiveness to environmental rewards. These findings emphasize the need to review treatment protocols and design differentiated interventions based on the type of substance used and the neuro-personality underpinnings in the field of addiction psychology.
