هدف از این پژوهش تأثیر یک دوره تمرینات هوازی بر میزان افسردگی و تغییرات فاکتور استرس اکسیداتیو در هیپوکامپ و پروفرونتال کورتکس مغز رتهای مبتلا به آلزایمر بود. بدین منظور 40 سر رت نر ویستار 8 هفته‌ای با میانگین وزن 33±237 گرم به طور تصادفی در چهار گروه 10تایی شامل: کنترل، ورزش، آلزایمر و ورزش+آلزایمر قرار گرفتند. پروتکل تمرینی شامل 12 هفته دویدن روی تردمیل با سرعت 12 متر بر دقیقه و به مدت 30 دقیقه در هر جلسه بود. در انتهای دوره تمرینی، آزمونهای سرکوب احساس تغذیه و تعلیق دم جهت برآورد افسردگی و همچنین سطوح مالون‌دی‌آلدئید هیپوکامپ و پرفرونتال به روش برادفورد انجام شد. همچنین جهت القای آلزایمر مقدار سه میلی‌گرم بر کیلوگرم استرپتوزوسین در حجم پنج میکرولیتر آب مقطر استریل در ناحیه بطن مغز تزریق شد. نتایج نشان داد که تمرینات ورزشی سبب کاهش معنا‌دار میزان افسردگی در آزمون‌های تأخیر در غذاخوردن و مدت‌زمان بی‌حرکتی در رت‌های مبتلا به آلزایمر شده است. همچنین تمرینات سبب کاهش معنادار سطوح مالون‌دی‌آلدئید در هیپوکامپ رت‌های آلزایمری، درحالی‌که تفاوت معنا‌داری در ناحیه در پروفرونتال مشاهده نشد. به نظر می‌رسد، فعالیت ورزشی سبب ایجاد ایمنی در برابر آلزایمر می‌شود و احتمالاً در جلوگیری از بروز افسردگی در بیماران مبتلا به آلزایمر مؤثر باشد.
