رانت منابع طبیعی از کانال¬های متفاوتی بر اقتصاد کشورها اثرگذار است. انتظار می¬رود درآمد ناشی از فروش منابع طبیعی موجب رونق اقتصادی کشورها شود، اما تجربه اقتصادی دهه¬های اخیر نشان‌دهنده مشکلات پرشمار اقتصادی در این کشورهاست که شاید مهم‌ترین آن¬ها افزایش حجم اقتصاد سایه باشد. از سویی نهادها تعیین¬کننده محورهای مهم اقتصادی از جمله توزیع منابع و دارایی¬ها در جامعه هستند، به گونه¬ای که سطح کیفیت نهادی موجب هدایت منابع و تخصیص بهینه آن¬ها شده و از طریق ثبات اقتصادی و کاهش نااطمینانی بر حجم اقتصاد سایه اثرگذار است. در پژوهش حاضر، هدف آن است تا اثر رانت منابع طبیعی و کیفیت نهادی بر اقتصاد سایه در 87 کشور با تورم بالا و تورم پایین طی دوره 2018-2000 مورد بررسی قرار گیرد. روش تجزیه‌وتحلیل مطالعه، گشتاورهای تعمیم‌یافته سیستمی  است. برای برآورد اقتصاد سایه از نرم¬افزار Smart PLS استفاده‌ شده است. یافته‌های این مطالعه نشان می¬دهند که در هردو گروه کشورهای با تورم پایین و کشورهای با تورم بالا، افزایش کیفیت نهادی، حجم اقتصاد سایه را کاهش داده و رانت منابع طبیعی نیز رابطه¬ای مثبت با حجم اقتصاد سایه داشته است.
